If you need one dimension (for example a line) to measure the feature then use feet, since it is a distance. If you need 2 dimensions, then use square feet, for example, classrooms. You can't measure a classroom my just measuring one side, you need at least two (i.e. two dimensions). If you need 3 dimensions, then we would need something like cubic feet, but it's not necessary to go there right now with your problem.
