We want to isolate the x on one side, right? So we want to get rid of the root sign, the 4 and the 1. Get rid of the root sign first. How do we get rid of the root sign?

There's no way you're going to get these until you learn how to work basic linear equations like 4x + 1 = 9 
Go back and review that material before attempting these problems.
