With the right kind and amount of fertilizer, you can use poorer land and get nice high yields; you don't have to rotate crops to renew the soil; etc.
Artificial fertilizers are cheap to produce  as long as energy is cheap.
All of these are short-term advantages, but it is the short term that drives the economy.
There are many long term disadvantages to using artificial fertilizers, but farmers tend to ignore them because the short term dominates.
So Immediate Efficacy , Affordability & ease of use makes them very advantageous.
