The ancient Chinese referred to their country as The Middle Kingdom.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Chung kuo or Zhongua (=Middle kingdom) and the character looks somewhat like the greek letter 'Phi'.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
In addition to being though of as the Middle kingdom they also referred to themselves as halfway between Heaven, and Hell.

An addition, they also were thought that they were in the middle of the world.
