Derek distributed thirty pieces of apple to his friends. If each apple slice was one-eighth of an apple, how many apples did he distribute to his friends? three and one-half four and one-half three and three-fourths four and one-fourth

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

if he gave 30 pieces of an apple, and each piece is 1/8, then 30 pieces are 30 x 1/8.....can you do that ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Im not good At Fractions. :I

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

30/1 x 1/8.....just multiply straight across (30 x 1)/(1 x 8)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

38?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

no......(30 x 1) / (1 x 8) = 30/8 can you make 30/8 into a mixed number ?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

how many times does 8 go into 30 without going over ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmm

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

let me just show you ...30/8.....8 goes into 30 three times (8 x 3 = 24)....the 3 is your whole number. Now there is a remainder of 6....the 6 is your numerator and the denominator stays the same. So now we have 3 6/8, which reduces to 3 3/4.
