The Italian city-states depended on commerce and the wealth of merchants for their growth and development. Business was the most important thing for these cities. Their survival depended on attracting commerce to the city. This is true of many modern cities, as well. Select a city from either of the following lists: Renaissance city-states Venice Florence Milan Naples Modern cities London, United Kingdom Rio de Janeiro, Brazil New York City, USA Beijing, China Mumbai, India Now imagine that you are working for the Chamber of Commerce in your chosen city. It is your job to attract new business to the city. In order to accomplish this task, you will need to create a pamphlet that will help bring new businesses to your city. Your pamphlet will have two separate parts: a map that you design and a summary of what makes your city an ideal place for business. Part 1: Creating a Map of your City For the first part, you will need to create a map that shows the physical or cultural attributes of your city. View the ‘How To Create A Map’ tutorial to help you understand what steps to take in creating your map. You will need to: design a map that shows physical or cultural attributes of the city include a map key include a title for the map label all relevant features such as waterways Tip: You can use commonly available drawing software or online mapping tools to help create your map. Part 2: Writing a Summary of your City For the second part, you will need to write a summary that highlights the factors that will encourage businesses to come to your city. You will need to: write a summary that is a minimum of two paragraphs describe the physical and human resources in your city and how these can promote business; examples are natural resources, wealth of the city, other businesses, and types of labor skills available explain how geographic location affects opportunities for commerce and trade in your city describe at least one place of cultural interest identify characteristics of your city’s population, such as the size, level of wealth, and level of cultural diversity identify languages spoken and forms of communication Remember, you must create the map yourself, so it is not possible to simply cut and paste a map from the internet. Also, you want to present a clear explanation of your city and why it would be a good place for a business to be located. Be sure to emphasize these points.
