What was the significance of the Battle of Midway for the Americans?

"It stopped further Japanese advances and conquests in the Pacific. It proved to Americans that the Japanese could be defeated. The Japanese lost hundreds of their most experienced aircrew and sailors. Victory in the battle handed the strategic initiative in the Pacific to the US,an initiative they retained for the remainder of the war."
