solve>>>> A triangle has an area of 20cm^2. The height of the triangle is 3 cm longer than the base. ((((Find the height and base of the triangle))))

OpenStudy (anonymous):

area of the triangle is given by (base)(height)(0.5), and the area is 20. you know that height is 3cm longer than the base. This is equivalent of saying height is same as (base+3). Now you have 1 equation with 1 unknown (in terms of base). so get base, and height is just base +3 (as mentioned previously)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

base + 3 = height??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes because question says the height of the triangle is 3cm longer than the base.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

where do we put the 20 into the equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(0.5)(base)(height)=20, but then you know that height = base +3. Substituting height= base+3 into the equation, you get (0.5)(base)(base+3)=20.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what did you get for the answer??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

base is 5. and height is 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't know how to solve this problem

ok thank you katherine!!!
