Has anyone worked with alum to form crystals, and if so any tips on how to get a better looking result?

use sewing thread or other string instead of nylon fishing line, but crystals will grow on the entire length of the submerged string. Crystals don't adhere to nylon, so if you use it, you can get bigger, better crystals.

This is just an expiriment I was going to do since my chem teacher said I can use her lab, its simple and not much can go horribley wrong :P Was wondering if mabye you have done it with copper sulfate or mabye just food coloring? Mabye even other salts? If so what color did it produce, and what risks came with it?
