2011 6.00sc? it probably wasn't explained - tho' the effect of that function looks familiar - did you watch all the lectures? you can play with it on pythontutor.com - http://tinyurl.com/l26px4e just adding a print statement helps http://dpaste.com/1345029/

looks like it is meant to scramble the text the inner function is always evaluated first - everytime you recurse you add a function onto the call stack - it would be nice to have an explanation of its intent maybe just to make our head explode
