what is the equation of the plane that passes through (1,2,-5) and is perpendicular to the planes 2x-y+z=1 and 2x+y+z=2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a point cant be (1,2,-5)?

OpenStudy (psymon):

3d-space @OpenSessame

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ahhh....Okay. So perpendicular means...? @zabrina_bernice

OpenStudy (psymon):

Atit intersects at 90 degree angles.

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

perpendicular planes imply the dot product of vectors is 0 vector <a,b,c> is perpendicular to <2,-1,1> and <2,1,1> --> 2a-b+c = 0 and --> 2a+b+c = 0

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

therefore b =0 --> 2a+c = 0 a = 1 c = -2

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

vector is <1,0,-2> goes through point (1,2,-5) --> (x-1) + 0(y-2) -2(z+5) = 0 --> x -2z = 11
