Can someone give me an example of a contra-positive statement please? "If a polygon has four sides, then it is a quadrilateral"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm thinking "If a polygon is a quadrilateral, then it has four sides", but I'm not sure if that's right. The other choices are: A. If a polygon is not a quadrilateral, then it does not have four sides. B. If a polygon is a quadrilateral, then it does not have four sides. D. If a polygon does not have four sides, then it is not a quadrilateral.

OpenStudy (ankit042):

The contrapositive of a conditional statement is formed by negating both the hypothesis and the conclusion. I think It will be A

OpenStudy (ankit042):

sorry missed the interchanging part so The contrapositive of a conditional statement is formed by negating both the hypothesis and the conclusion and interchanging it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'll try that. This is a practice review for the EOC and it's not graded. I just needed a little help figuring out what the contra-positive was again. Thank you for helping.

OpenStudy (ankit042):

You should try to understand the concept! Can you figure out hypothesis and conclusion in the question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The hypothesis is the "If" statement, and the conclusion is then "then" statement.

OpenStudy (ankit042):

Great :D Now just use the definition of contra positive and you are good to go

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I understand the concept, I just can't remember how to do the contra-positive, inverse, and converse statements.

OpenStudy (ankit042):

K ...Good!
