I think you meant "dismal science"? Economics is referred to as a dismal science for more than one reason, I expect. A good part of that reason is that it deals with scarcity, unmitigated and unsolvable, in a sense. The origins of the phrase seem to be rooted in the Malthusian theory that the world of human beings will become extinct due to starvation because supply of food cannot keep up with the demand created by exponential growth in population. Malthus was wrong, of course, but the name sticks.
