Why is it important to learn to do certain steps mentally? How is this beneficial? What is a situation, or mathematical problem, in which being able to complete various steps mentally can be helpful?

A good example of a method done mentally is the FOIL method of multiplying binomials. This method is faster than using the distributive property when multiplying binomials. That is why it is important to learn it.
