Can someone review this Evolution of Sketch As time passes, words continue to develop new meanings. The word “sketch” illustrates this rule. Sketch originates as an adjective from the Greek word skhedios meaning, done with little preparation. Then, in the mid Seventeenth Century, the Italians adopted the word and created the noun schizzo, an outline, from schizzare, which means to make an outline. During this time, the Germans also introduced skizze, while the Dutch produced schets. Both of these new words also refer to an outline. Then, the English adopted the word to be, sketch, meaning, “To describe briefly…to give important facts or points without going into detail, outline” (Oxford Dictionaries). A little later, sketch became an art term because artists had to draw sketches, little outlines or figures, of the pictures they wished to create. In comedy, sketch means a short skit in the show. Saturday Night Live has some of the best and funniest sketches, where people do and say the funniest or craziest words to make people laugh. Finally, sketch molds into the adjective used today to describe a place that does not look safe, so stay away from the people and places that people say look sketch. Sketchy, which derives from sketch, also describes a person or place that appears unsafe. This word sketch has truly evolved, starting as a simple outline to a funny skit, and finally into a dangerous place. The more time that passes, the more interesting definitions seem to become.
