Should the U.S. adopt the metric system? Why or why not?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

It would make sense to if you're working in science. That way, we can all keep it consistent rather than take out our calculators to convert numerical values to our system.

OpenStudy (rogue):

It would be nice. However, it's not practical to simply suddenly adopt the Metric System when hundreds of millions of people are used to using the English System. So, no.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes - we are a bit behind the times.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

OpenStudy (aaronq):

In all seriousness, metric system is superior in that units increase by 10, not by some random number.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

Using some old king's foot as a unit of measurement is kinda ridiculous.

OpenStudy (frostbite):

Haha, awesome one. One of my lecture that worked at Ford told me that a rocket ones was blown into pieces due to the fact that there was constantly a conversion between units and in the end a mistake was made (a cooperation between EU and the US).

OpenStudy (aaronq):

haha i did hear about that.

OpenStudy (abb0t):

I heard about that too! Lol

OpenStudy (frostbite):

but aaronq... the numbers are not random... don't we have a "standard person" to measure form... add a standard horse too when you're at it?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

haha i was referring to the non-linear increase, like, 12 inches =1 foot, but 3 feet=1 yard, and 1760 yards = 1 mile. It's the same with units of volume, cupS, PINTS?

OpenStudy (frostbite):

Hmmm... well I've never set my self into the units... only that 1 mile = 1.6 km... when I firsts came to the US I was kinda hoping that the signs wrote distances in km... damn I got disappointed when driving from LA to Las Vegas.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

haha yeah, when you see them written on the signs distances seem so small, but then you recall that they're in miles lol btw, vegas is probably awesome.

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Are you 21 to even be in Vegas? lol

OpenStudy (frostbite):

I was 16... My father was going to a convention for audio precision and as it was during our holiday I just tagged along. Yes I could not drink, gamble or see any shows, but still it was an amazing experience... But I was also surprised that amount of prostitution was high... I could get a full deck of cards with women they offered just by walking from one end of the strip to the other.

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

LOL :) now u should move from metric system :)
