Squats and calf raises both tackle the lower body. Abdominal crunches and biceps are the mid and top section. Calf raises only tackle a certain part of your legs, whereas, squats cover a more broad range of muscle.
Additionally, squats are a compound lift - meaning they use multiple muscle groups, which creates significant response from your central nervous system. Squats changed my life. I'm a fan.
