You should approach this question by first establishing how important religion was in general - did people attend church regularly? Were holidays celebrated ritualistically and with great religious significance? To what extent did people believe their lives on Earth would decide their fate for eternity?

All of these things, if prevalent in peoples lives, would indicate a lo of culture being dictated by the church and therefore by their pastors - If your decisions in life are based on "the word of god" the man translating and explaining that word to you have a great deal of influence on your life.
