what is difference between total and partial differentiation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Partial diffrentiation is when you calculate the derivative versus one variable assuming all the other variables remain constant

in total.... there u diffrniate with one variable.. while in partial 2 or more variables

if u want a physical example.. i have an excellent one imagine u have a potential as a function of space in three dimensions lets say V(x,y,z) = x + 2y + 3z now you wanna find the electric field.. you are interested only in the X component of the electric field then u must know from your physics that \[E = -\delta V/\delta x\] and so you get -1 units similarly if you want E in the direction of y you end with -2 and similarly -3 units in z..
