If Germany had been more successful in the Battle of the Atlantic, what would have happened?
Britain would have likely been starved out of the war. As an island nation, it needed more vital supplies (like food, materials for weapons, fuel, etc..) that it didn't have in abundance at home to keep it afloat and the only way to get those over to it in bulk was over water. Germany conducted u-boat attacks against the convoys keeping Britain's lifelines open hoping to knock it out of the war and they were doing well...at first. But better convoy tactics, technology such as sonar, cracking the navy's Enigma codes (so we could tell where their wolfpacks were), along with the United States' formal entry into the war eventually helped to turn the tide.
