One easy way to do this is by actually trying some real numbers. For example, try 4 quarters q=4 and ten dimes d=10 (total of two dollars). See which expression works out, make sure there's only one solution and you'll know the answer. If you ever get two or more expressions that give the correct value, try again with different values.
