6. A biologist hypothesizes that restricting food from mice will decrease their activity. He designs an experiment in which he observes the activity of 50 mice under restricted food regimens. Which of he following is true about his study? A. The study is well designed since it uses a large sample of mice. B. The study does not include a control group. C. The study includes too many variables. D. The results will allot the biologist to draw a valid conclusion.
9. Which of the following are three goals of science? A. to make life easier, to extend the human life span, and to reduce pain and suffering. B. to conduct experiments, to analyze data, and to publicize research results C. to gather info about the natural world, to explain natural phenomena, and to allow reasonable predictions of future events D. to influence public opinion, to challenge religious beliefs, and to establish a basis for laws.
8. C. The study includes too many variables. (e.g. unless the mice are all clones, he's not accounting for genetic differences) 9. C. to gather info about the natural world, to explain natural phenomena, and to allow reasonable predictions of future events
First question: experiments require scientific controls - also known as control group - or they will be deemed not too reliable. Having 50 mice just means that the sample size is large. This may account for having many variables, but I am leaning towards the absence of a controlled group, which makes experiments more valid.
