Find the vertical asymptotes, if any, of the graph of the rational function.

OpenStudy (explainitlikeimfive):

OpenStudy (kainui):

You can only get a vertical asymptote when dividing by 0. Is there any time when x^2+1=0?

OpenStudy (explainitlikeimfive):

I don't think so. I didn't know it was possible to divide by zero........

OpenStudy (kainui):

Haha you can't.

OpenStudy (kainui):

Here, look at this graph, y=1/x |dw:1376935858720:dw| When x=0 there is no value, it just sort of trails off to positive and negative infinity as you approach 0 from either side. This invisible line at x=0 that's untouched (since you can't divide) is a vertical asymptote.
