Will someone please explain to me where calcium and bromine are on the periodic table and how these two elements might combine to form a compound

They're both on the 4th row. Calcium (Ca) is group II, and Bromine (Br) is Group 7.. Since both want to achieve an octet, Group 7 elements gain 1 electrons and Group II lose 2 electrons (b/c it' easier (takes less energy) to lose those 2 than to gain 6).
