there is a log property \[\large \log_{b}b^{x} = x \] if the bases are equal they cancel leaving only the exponent now apply this to your problem....you have a base of 2 raised to 3rd power take log base 2 of both sides \[\large \log_{2} 2^{3} = \log_{2} x \] cancel \[3 = \log_{2} x\]
