can two lines intersect, and one not intersect with either one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you mean a third line?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1376960436867:dw| Eventually that third line will intersect unless it is not a line.

Directrix (directrix):

If you are in a rectangular solid shaped room, look at the rectangular floor. The length of the floor and the width of the floor can be thought of as two intersecting lines. Their intersection is a corner of the floor. Now look up to the ceiling where it meets one of the side walls. Do you see what could be thought of as a line that does not intersect, cannot intersect, the two intersecting lines on the floor? @lwarman

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes thank you! @Directrix

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Directrix Very true, a different plane.

Directrix (directrix):

@lwarman So, what is the answer to the question?

Directrix (directrix):

I think the question is supposed to be: can two lines intersect, and a third line not intersect with either one? as mentioned by @completeidiot That is the question I was helping with.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i think, because the other corner of the room makes another line that will never intersect with the first two lines making the first corner! Right? @Directrix

Directrix (directrix):

@lwarman yes The two black lines in the floor intersect at a corner of the room. The blue line cannot touch either of the black lines. They are said to be skew lines.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That makes sense! Thank you very much! @Directrix

Directrix (directrix):

Pleased to be of service. :)
