How do u know y is a function of x? My hw provides me with an equation and i need to find out the following answer. THANKS

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is the P section of my calculus section btw

OpenStudy (akashdeepdeb):

we know that y is a function of x when EVERY x value has A UNIQUE y value! And we write that as y = f(x) read as y is equal to a function OF x! Getting me? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I understand but I am still unsure as to how do i find it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Like x^2 + y^2 = 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is there really a way to check it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Like an equation or something?

OpenStudy (akashdeepdeb):

This will not be considered a function!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh yea i need to study my math vocab

OpenStudy (akashdeepdeb):

There is NO equation to check it but if you know equations of ellipses, circles and parabolas and lines then you can find out from there! For example:
