Compare the quantity in Column A with the quantity in Column B. PA is tangent to the circle at A. https://study.ashworthcollege.edu/access/content/group/45b8c516-1008-46d7-aa1d-bb9b62c786ff/geometry_exam_12_files/mc011-2.jpg

Column A: AP Column B: AX

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A. The quantity in Column A is greater. B. The quantity in Column B is greater. C. The two quantities are equal. D. The relationship cannot be determined from the information given.

OpenStudy (mandre):

From what I can see D is the answer, but I might be missing something so maybe someone who knows better than me will answer :).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, thanks:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Directrix Help me out again please?

Directrix (directrix):

Are we given that segment AP is a tangent to the circle. This type problem, Quantitative Comparison, was on the SATs at one time. So, if segment AP is a tangent, it will be stated. Look at the question and see. And, if there are several questions based on this diagram, look above the first question for given information.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Whats given, im not sure how to read the picture?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just know the two things im supposed to compare and that AP is tangent.

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

ok here is what you need...look at first 2 theorems http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circles#Theorems

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

from those you can find.... AX = 9 AP = 2sqrt13

Directrix (directrix):

AP = 2sqrt13 is based on the assumption that segment AP is a tangent, is it not? @dumbcow

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

it states that AP is tangent to circle

Directrix (directrix):

@OpenSessame The solution for AX comes from this theorem:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So that would mean that AP is bigger?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The problem is thats what i got at first and it said it was wrong. And Directrix is says that PA is tangent of the circle.

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

in original post "Compare the quantity in Column A with the quantity in Column B. PA is tangent to the circle at A. "

Directrix (directrix):

1) The problem is thats what i got at first and it said it was wrong. --> I don't know what you are saying here. What did you write the first time and was told what you wrote is wrong? 2) is says that PA is tangent of the circle. Okay. Finally, I see it. Thanks for your patience on that.

Directrix (directrix):

@OpenSessame Tell me about this: 1) The problem is thats what i got at first and it said it was wrong. --> I don't know what you are saying here. What did you write the first time and was told what you wrote is wrong?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That AP is the bigger quantity.

Directrix (directrix):

AX = 9 = sqrt(81) ----> LARGER AP = 2sqrt13 = sqrt(52)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the answer would be B?

Directrix (directrix):

Yes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay thanks! I have a few other questions i need help with...

Directrix (directrix):

Close this thread and open a new post. I'll meet you at the new post.
