Why is carbon so abundant in living things when oxygen is the most abundant element on Earth?

it is the ability of carbon atom to bond to four other elements that gives it more flexibility, thus the reason living things have carbon as one of the main component. as for oxygen, it is combustible specially at higher contents, therefore making it corrosive if not detrimental to chemical structures.
