One of the big helps in Japanese is that the sentences in Kana are mostly phonetic. Ha is pronounce Wa in one special, and common, place. There are a few other, small exceptions. So it is easy to sound things out. This can help lead to understanding and tying it together with any audio practice for the vocabulary.
