I give up on this quiz. Someone just tell me how to solve the problems because I clearly didn't retain any of this information :( FAN AND MEDAL WILL BE AWARDED (as always) <3

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

you have find f(g(2)), first step is find g(2) so get function g(x) which is x^2-6x-7 and substitute the x for 2, what do you get ?

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

you have (2)^2 -6(2) -7 = ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-15 ?

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

correct, so now you do the other part which is f(g(2)), you know that g(2) = -15, so you need to solve f(-15), substitute -15 on function f(x) x + 8 (substitute the x for -15)

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

so what do you get ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am still trying to work it out , I'm a little confused on how exactly to set up the equation

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

is simple you have function f(x)= x + 8 when substitute the x for -15 it is -15 +8

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

so what is -15+8 = ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh , then it would be -7 ?

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

correct, so that is the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you :) Mind walking me through the next two ?

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

next problem is the same procedure, you try solving it and I tell you if is right. you have f(g(-1)), so what is the first step ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The first step is to substitute x with -1 ?

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

correct on function g(x) ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yess

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

so you have x^2 -7x -9, so it is (-1)^2 -7(-1)-9 = ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That would be -3 ?

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

you have (-1)^2 = 1 then -7(-1)= 7 and -9 so it is 1 +7 -9 = ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-1

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

correct, now what is the next step ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Move on to the next part and that is f(g(-1)) ?

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

next part is just f(-1) so substitute the x for -1 on function f(x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That would look like -1 - 2 ?

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

good job, so what is the answer ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-3

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

correct

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

the next problem you don't have to solve g(x) because you don't have a number for x, so it is just inserting the equation that is on g(x), to f(x), that means substitute the x"s from f(x) for (-x+3)

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

try doing it, and I tell you if is right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay give me a few minutes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That would be 25

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

there is no numbers on the third one

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

you have f(x) = 9x-2, substitute the x for g(x) = -x+3 so you have 9x -2 9(-x+3) -2 do you understand what I did ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohhh ! Yes I understand , I solved it when I wasn't supposed to . My bad

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

now you solve that by multiplying as follows: 9(-x) = -9x 9(3) = 27 so you have -9x +27 -2 so what is the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

25 lol

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

-9x +25

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you so much for your help :)

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

your welcome :) Hope it helped you understand how to solve this problems.
