The paintings done had a different technique then most other countries.
In medieval Japan, there were less portraits done, but more landscapes of mountains or rice fields. 
Take this for example, having your portrait meant nothing in medieval Japan, but having your field drawn or hand up a landscape of a mountain you would be considered high class.
