OpenStudy (wolf1728):

When doing addition or subtraction of fractions the denominators (bottom numbers) must be the same. So, you will have to change the bottom numbers to what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Yes 10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its -1/10

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Yes 4/10 -5/10 = 1/10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Hmm just looked at the problem again 2/5 / -1/2 Should that division symbol / be in the middle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes its division

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thankyou guys !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

click the best response please

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

okay then my previous explanation is wrong. So, it is (2/5) / (-1/2) which becomes (2/5) * -2 = -4/5

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Did everyone catch that correction?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how does (-1/2) become -2?

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

When doing division of fractions, you get the second fraction, invert and multiply. (a/b) / (c/d) = (a/b) * (d/c)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh i had no idea thankyou so much for the help!

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

u r welcome By the way to avoid confusion it would be advisable if everyone learned how to make this division symbol ÷

OpenStudy (wolf1728):
