I would say that in 1783 there wasn't a science called 'aerospace engineering', but only some knowledgeable 'amateurs' who tried to understand the principles of space traveling. Only in the last century we've seen a development of a true scientific domain aimed at aerospace engineering, including theories, experiments, prove of principle etc.
