Samantha and David are planting a vegetable garden as shown. They are enclosing the perimeter of the garden with fencing to prevent animals from eating the vegetables. What is the length of fencing that they need?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 38 but my answers are 21 ft, 26 ft, 29 ft, and 32ft.

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

you need to find the perimeter, so you need to ADD all the length

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it would be 21?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i was solving for the area.

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

you have 10 + 2 + 6 + 3 = 21 but you are missing the other 2 sides that does not have numbers, can you figure it out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not sure if it matters, but how would I figure that out?

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

ok, one side is 10 -3 and the other 6 - 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i see that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but since the side is missing wouldnt my answer just be 21

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

the sides are there, is just not giving you the length, that is why you need to find it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh alright but how

OpenStudy (anonymous):

all i've been learning is the formulas for finding volumes, surface areas, and whatever else but i've never like found the missing variable in a shape

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do u know how to

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

just told you, you have 21 so far, no add the other 2 sides which are ok, one side is 10 -3 and the other 6 - 2

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

I meant now add

OpenStudy (anonymous):

add 10 minus 3 and 6 minus 2??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No he means ad 10+3 and 6+2. What ever the sum is for that, add that to 21.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thats 13 and 8, 13 + 8 is 21, plus 21 is 42 but my highest answer is 32

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh sorry I was wrong.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You subtract 10 and 3. Then you subtract 6 and two.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Whatever that equals you add to the 21.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 7 and 4 added to 21 which is 28

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait my bad

OpenStudy (anonymous):

didnt add the four

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its 32

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the final answer is 32??

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

CORRECT

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's right. Glad I could help.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alright makes sense now thank you both so much!
