why are ecologists unsettled on whether or not any truly commensal interactions among organisms?

Depends..... on what organisms. Like a tree for example...... a bird might put a nest on top of a tree where its safe to lay eggs. The tree isnt "harmed", but might be hindered in getting light from the sun where the nest it. So the bird is benefiting, where as the tree isnt. if that makes any sense.......
