The lateral area of a cube is one hundred forty-four square kilometers. What is its side length?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i figured since a cube has 6 sides i would just divide 144 by 6 but none of my answers are 24

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lateral area is the the area of one of the faces ^.^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and so is equal to the square of the side length haha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the answers are 3km, 6km, 12km, 18km

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well I'm sure it's one of those ^.^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do i solve it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like I said, the lateral area is the area of one of the faces of the cube. now, the area is the square of the side-length

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let's give that side length a name, let's call it x ^.^ So \(\large x^2 = 144\) since 144 is the area. so?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

based off that i would guess 12 is the answer cause 12^2 is 144

OpenStudy (anonymous):

was i supposed to solve it like that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok. not sure what just happen but i got my answer thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you got pan'd ^.^
