how do you define what a melody is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The definition of melody from google is "a sequence of single notes that is musically satisfying."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like a riff?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Multiple riffs can make a melody if you put the right chords or notes in it. :) (I play the violin, but I do know some stuff about guitars)

The melody is the defining prime idea that you first hear in your head...

Good answers so far. Defining a melody becomes a complex question in the presence of a compelling countermelody. If you're in a music appreciation class, listen for the tune. If you listened to this piece ten times, what tune from the piece would you sing to someone? That's the first step in finding the melody.
