Find the value of X, I'll draw it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ganeshie8 could you please help me with this last one? This is the final one that's been stumping me in the practise package, I'll draw it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1377296260363:dw|

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

its an isosceles trap

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

so two things :- 1) legs are equal (2x+3y = 12) 2) base angles are equal (30x+11y = 112)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

solve both the equations

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

can you ? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So for the legs, would that be X=2? and I'm not exactly sure how to solve the second part, am I supposed to isolate the x or the y?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

not exactly

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

you need to solve the system of two equations, you familiar with substitution method ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

2x+3y = 12 ---------(1) 30x+11y = 112------(2)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

from (1), 2x+3y = 12 3y = 12-2x y = (12-2x)/3 substitute this y value in (2)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

30x + 11(12-2x)/3 = 112

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

solve x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OH! Yes i do know the substitution method, ok I'll try again

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

good :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, so when i substituted x I got 3.33 and when i substituted for y I got 1.33

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

looks wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

eh alright. I don't know what I did wrong

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

30x + 11(12-2x)/3 = 112 30x + 44-22x/3 = 112

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

30x-22x/3 = 68

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

90x-22x = 68*3

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

68x = 68*3

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

x=3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't get it at all :/ I thought I understood substitution but i guess not

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, the answer's 3? You solved the leg part, but how did you solve the other part? the same way?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

hmm you just want the x right ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

or you weant 'y' also ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, just the x but you had given me two equations to solve,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or was that for the legs too? Sorry I'm confused :/

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

its okay, we have solved both the equations. after that we got x = 3 :- in above solution, we did below steps : 1) isolate y in equation(1) 2) substitute y in equation(2) 3) solve x

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

go thru it once again when u have time, im sure its easy for you :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you! I'll just have to look over the substitution method haha. Thanks again!

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

yes :) you wlcme !!!
