The initial slave trade was to South America while in North America the "indentured servant was used, working for 7 years to pay for being transported to the New World. As this began to dwindle African slave began to replace them. The culmination was that North American received about 6% of all African transported. This is not to minimize the effects of slavery in North America but to recognize the overall economy was not the result of slavery.
