Are you sure it is negative. My assignment says absolute values are always positive.

Since the absolute value is for 2 only, the ABSOLUTE value of 2 is what's gonna get multiplied by -8. Therefore, that would be 2 * -8 which is -16.

Yea if the whole calculation came with an absolute value then yeah it's +16, but here it's just one of the two values that has an absolute value applied on. Hence it's -16.
