Whatever is within the absolute value brackets is positive; Anything else remains the same.
Can you walk me through it please?
That makes the negative 6 positive, since it's got an absolute value applied on, and so is the negative 5 at the very end. For the terms in between, nothing changes because nothing is negative, so it kinda stays the same. Doing the math, we get 23.

I just did :)! Basically, neglect the negative signs as long as you have absolute value brackets included within.
That makes more sense than the directions stated in my lesson. Thank you @Four.
