I looked at the nice list and there is one thing I would add: It is always best to pick one that interests you or that you already know something about. I mean, "How did Julius Caesar affect Rome?" may be a great topic, but if you could not care less about Ancient Rome, researching it might be a chore. On the other hand, if you are really into music, then "How has the music industry been affected by the internet and digital downloading?" might be something you have a more vested interest in researching.
