And read http://openstudy.com/code-of-conduct I think they have told about [What are these medals for] Or @kayne can explain you better about ''Medals'' He is a moderator!

OpenStudy (kayne):

Hi everyone :) Welcome to OpenStudy @myst! Well, the medals are here for you to sort of reward your helpers. OpenStudy is full of helpers and you'll get lots of responses from people over here. So, you give a medal to the one who's helped you the most by providing you not only the answer but also a good background behind the answer. This is what we encourage here at OpenStudy. We believe that guiding the one who asked a question towards the answer is better than giving the answer right away. If you like the way a person is helping you and think that she's/he's a very good helper, you can become his/her fan and also write him/her a testimonial! Please read our Code of Conduct for more details. Enjoy your journey at OpenStudy! Feel free to give us a shout whenever you're in trouble over here or with your questions. Cheers!
