What's the best way to teach yourself how to play the guitar?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Practice over and over. Develop calluses

I learned by doing scales and learning one chord at a time. Keep practicing that chord until you get it perfect. If you find yourself making a thud, rather than a musical note you have your fingers too close to the metal band on the fret. If you need anymore advice, ask me. I wouldn't mind helping at all. :) Good luck!

It depends on your aptitude for music, but learn the basic chords first, and get your timing down. I would then recommend listening and trying to imitate some of your favorite guitar parts on songs. There are some great hints on youtube out there too. Good luck!

If you have any questions feel free to ask. I'm not the greatest guitarist out there but i do have a lot of experience playing different styles, and i do teach:)

And dont forget to practice for at least an hour every day

I agree with @alyJoan, try picking out a song you'd like to play, practice it and eventually you'll get the hang of things.

Also, another tip is, if a learning method teaches simplified chords, DON'T USE THOSE!! don't use those, it is so much harder to learn the regular chords from the simplified chords than it is the simplified chords from the normal ones. just a tip :)

over the course of a year i went from learning metallica to playing the faceless and things of the sort and very complex jazz just by sitting down and learning songs i like. you'll pick up tricks that bands use that you can apply to your own stuff. I've never in my life sat down and practiced scales but i can play many of them in different keys too just because i know how they sound
