Why do you think categories were used in the research rather than asking for a specific number of books? Most probably people can't remember precisely how many books they have read, so they make a quick estimate from memory.

We have two sets of numbers here and one set is a collection of categories rather than single numbers of books. Each category can stand by itself, but we want to be able to calculate the median of the data and see where it is. Decide for yourself which type of data graph would best fit the situation and then run your cursor over the following types to see if you are correct.

With this type of graph, the category labels go along the horizontal scale and the number of readers becomes the vertical scale. Again we must decide upon an appropriate increment for the number of readers. The highest number is 120, so an increment of 20 people should work fine.

The problem also requires finding the median of the data set. Do you remember how this is done from the numbers? First determine whether the total number of readers is odd or even. (25+60+50+120+25) = 280. This is an even number, so divide it by 2. 280/2 = 140. The median is halfway between the 140th and the 141st numbers. We leave this as an assignment question for you to determine its exact location in the set.
