What is the solution set of {x | x < -3} ∩ {x | x > 5}? all numbers except -3 and 5 the numbers between -3 and 5 the empty set all real numbers

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

is there any number that is both smaller than -3 and greater than 5?

OpenStudy (akashdeepdeb):

What do you think? :D Less than three would be -4,-5,-6,-7,-8............. Greatter than 5 would be 6,7,8,9,10......... Now what do you see common? :D

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

does this make since -3>x>5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no number can be there

OpenStudy (akashdeepdeb):

Exactly! So it will be an empty or a null set! :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so c

OpenStudy (akashdeepdeb):

Yes! :D

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

I did not mess up the signs, the points was to show that her intersection implies -3>x>5 which implies 5<-3, and thus no x exists and thus the set is empty

OpenStudy (akashdeepdeb):

My bad! Then maybe I misread it! It is 3:00AM here! :P

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

sort of a contradiction argument, but I see how it looks strange:)

OpenStudy (akashdeepdeb):

:D
