joe showed his work please explain what he did wrong. 2x^3-4x^2-48x 2x(x^2-2x-24) 2x (x+6)(x-4)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

do you see the error?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well i think when he factored out the gcf he messed up ?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

no that part is correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm well hold on

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope i aint got it :(

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the error happens when he factors x^2-2x-24 to get (x+6)(x-4) why is that wrong?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

he didnt find the correct multiples to add up to 2x

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

it's not +2x, it's actually -2x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well then subtract to 2x

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

notice how +6 - 4 = +2 but we want -2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so we should have -6 + 4 = -2 meaning that x^2-2x-24 should factor to (x-6)(x+4)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i see whear this is going

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

that's good

OpenStudy (anonymous):

tthank you

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
