a short story about someone that doesn't appreciate their family until the family next door dies. Does anyone know how to turn that into a short story?

Yeah, that makes for an excellent story.  Think about how a situation like that would affect you personally.  You might have fights or disagreements with your family or may not spend enough time with them.  We all take our families for granted and forget that some people are not as fortunate to have one or in this particular case families are destroyed by the inevitable merciless hands of death. When you approach things from a different perspective, sometimes unfortunate things have to happen for us to open our eyes and appreciate what we have.
