Fill the five gallon container. Use that to fill the three gallon. Empty the three gallon. There's two gallons left in the five gallon container. Dump it into the three gallon container. Fill up the five gallon container. Use the five gallon container to finish filling the three gallon container, which takes one gallon. Now there are four gallons left in the five gallon container. Sadly, you wasted six gallons.
